Ants

Ants are among the most common household pests. Ants also invade offices, warehouses, restaurants, and other structures where they can find food and water. Although there are over 10,000 different species of ants, only a small number of them are responsible for pest activity in local habitats. Some of the most common pest ants in the Chicago area are odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants.

Ant Behavior

Ants are extremely social insects and typically live in structured and cooperative nest communities (or colonies) that can be found in mounds, underground, or in trees. Carpenter ants often nest in wood and can be destructive to buildings. Colonies are headed by a queen or queens, whose main function is to lay eggs for the colony. The worker ants commonly seen by people are wingless females that build and protect the nest, look for food, and care for the young, along with other activities for the benefit of the community. The role of male ants is typically limited to reproduction. Ants communicate through chemical messages that can perform such tasks as identifying food sources and alerting the community to danger.

Ant Treatment

Most “over the counter” ant treatments are only effective in killing the ants that you actually see. We utilize a more comprehensive approach to destroy the active colony and prevent the infestation from recurring. Certain varieties of ants have multiple queens, and their populations will emerge at varying times over the course of the year. Our integrated treatment approach focuses on the entire unit and/or structure to help avoid such occurrences. We apply baits in discreet locations where the ants are active, provide localized and perimeter applications to the structure, and treat the wall voids for increased residual ant control.
